The mood of the story "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" is sad but has a little bit of curiosity in it. An example of sadness in the story is when Shmuel is telling Bruno about his old home in Poland and about how they ended up in the concentration camp.

Bruno misses the exploring he so enjoyed in Berlin, and one day he walks along the length of the fence, despite the fact that he has been forbidden to do so. He meets a boy who lives on the other side of the fence named Shmuel. Shmuel wears the striped pajamas that Bruno has seen from his window, and he is extraordinarily thin. I do enjoy reading a book that makes me think it over afterwards, and mark that as a sign of its strength, rather than the type that you close after The End and promptly forget. But, for me, the more I thought about The Boy in the Striped Pajamas the more I disliked elements that were far too contrived and so I'm not going to think about it
